Generation Interval

Every 2 to 10 minutes a new crossword puzzle is generated. The interval depends on the size of the puzzle. Small puzzles on smartphones are generated more often than large puzzles on tablets or desktop. To generate crossword puzzles, the web server needs some cpu power. Therefore it's not possible to create crossword puzzles for each request.


High Scores

For every size (small / medium / large) and every device (smartphone / tablet / desktop) there are personal high scores. The high scores are stored in a cookie. The faster you solve a puzzle, the more points you get.


Jokers

For 10 correctly solved fields you get an additional joker. Effort is rewarded and won't get stuck so often.


Operating Instructions

If a question has been answered correctly, it is highlighted and marked as correct. If nothing happens, something is wrong.

Fully solved questions are underlined. If you click on a question, a small dialog window appears. There you will have different options for each question. Some questions / answers are linked to websites with additional information. This is mostly Wikipedia. If the question is wrong in your opinion (content / form), you can suggest a correction. The puzzles are getting better and everybody is happy.

The puzzles can be solved with both the mouse and the keyboard.


Keyboard Codes

ENTER
The cursor automatically jumps to the next question. Press ENTER until a question appears that you can solve. In this way solving the puzzles is most enjoyable.

ESC
Removes the selection.

CURSOR KEYS
Moves the cursor left, right, top and bottom.

HOME
Jump with the cursor to the beginning of the selected question.

END
Jump with the cursor to the end of the selected question.

BACKSPACE
Deletes the letter in the current field. If the field is already empty, the letter of the previous field is deleted.

DELETE
Deletes the letter in the current field.

COMMA / POINT
Triggers the joker function for the current field.

A ... Z
The letters are entered or corrected and the cursor jumps to the next field. If a field is already solved, the cursor only jumps on if the entered letter matches the locked letter in the field.

Mouse Gestures

If you move with the mouse over an answer field, the question is displayed and all fields that belong to the answer are highlighted. Since almost every field is crossed, there are usually answers in both directions - down and across. Therefore, a horizontal mouse movement shows the horizontal question and a vertical mouse movement shows the vertical question. Only if there is no answer in one direction, the question of the other direction is shown. If you want to change the direction just move the mouse left right instead of top bottom or vice versa.

Clicking on an answer field, puts the cursor to the first blank answer field for that question. A second click puts the cursor directly to the clicked field.

If you get used to it, it's actually very intuitive. If two highlighted questions are too confusing, you can remove the selected question with ESC.


Participation

crosswordpuzzle.net is a small spinoff project of crosswords.net. But without the trappings. There you can edit, suggest and correct questions. And you can suggest completely new crossword puzzle topics.

We kindly ask you to deal with each other fairly in a respectful manner. In order to prevent editing wars, there are different democratic voting mechanisms – quality of questions, corrections, etc.


Grid Structure

We are very proud of the grid structure in our crossword puzzles. The asymmetric grid structure is intended. Symmetric grid structures may be a little bit more beautiful, but they can only store a fixed and limited set of answers with certain lengths. Asymmetric grid structures have the advantage, that the algorithm can place a wider range of answers with much different lengths. That leads to less limitations which again leads to much higher quality content.

Crossword puzzles with special topics, that consists of special questions only, wouldn't be possible without asymmetric grid structures. With already a small amount of answers and questions, the algorithm can produce grid structures with an incredible high ratio of double crossed fields. Our special topic crossword puzzles are not filled with a few special questions. They consist to 100 % only of special pure topic related questions.

General knowledge can become boring after some time. We highly recomment to checkout some special themed crossword puzzles. What are your hobbies? What do you like? Animals, cooking, travelling. These puzzle can really make fun. If a certain topic does not yet exist, we and all the users would be very happy if you start a new one. By the time other users will join and together the community can create the best themed crossword puzzles.
